After Auggie was born it took them two hours to do their typical testing and bathing of him. During an hour of that I was sleeping off the medicine from the c-section in a recovery room. Then they wheeled me past the nursery where Auggie was being taken care of and had the grandmas and grandpas and both Aunt Kendras meet me there to see the new little boy in the family. Everyone was excited to see him and marveled at how big he was!!! Then they took me to my room to wait for Auggie. It took an hour for them to finish up and finally bring him to me. I was so frustrated that it took that long, I had only spent about 15 min. with him in the operating room and I wanted to hold him and bond with him. When they brought him to the room I was so happy to see his little round face. We spent several hours together having the grandparents, two Aunt Kendras, Uncle Josh, and Mommy and Daddy holding him and adoring him. The nurses kept checking his temp. and it was low. This concerned them and finally they decided to take him down to the nursery to put him under a warmer. While there they found that his oxygen was low also. This really concerned them and they decided to do a chest x-ray. The x-ray came back and it showed that he had fluid on his lungs. They said this sometimes happens with a baby so big and going through a c-section instead of a vaginal birth. They said he would be put into the level II nursery and given an IV to give him antibiotics and food. This devastated me because I could not get out of bed yet and go see him. Everyone else could see him except me!!!
Well later that day because I had a great nurse, Ami, she helped me get out of bed and took me in a wheel chair to see Auggie. It killed me to see him in his isolette all hooked up to IV and monitors. I knew he was in good hands though at OSF since they are a level 3 birthing center. There was no other hospital in 27 counties that would have been better for him! Auggie was in the nursery until Friday hooked to the IV and monitors, then the doctors said he was probably going to be done with that and okay to be taken off, but he now was jaundice! This didn't shock me because it runs in our family. I just was disappointed that now that he was getting over the one thing, he now had something else. It seemed never ending. During all these days Chad and I would go in the nursery every 2-3 hours to feed him and snuggle. I really believe Auggie being in the nursery instead of my room was a blessing in disguise. It motivated me to get out of bed and start walking unassisted after the surgery. No cut on my stomach was going to stop me from seeing my new son! It was 24 hours after my surgery that I was walking all the way to the nursery. I couldn't believe myself that I was doing so well after the c-section. I thought I would be much worse off.
Then Saturday they dropped the bomb that Auggie would not be going home until maybe Sunday, but I would have to be discharged at midnight Saturday because my insurance wouldn't cover more that 4 days in the hospital. We were so upset because there was no way we were going home without our little boy. They tried to convince me to go home for a little while and get some rest, but of course I refused. My nurse, Heather, helped us out and picked out some reclining chairs for us in the waiting room. She also asked for a cot to be set up in the waiting room for us. It was totally bizarre sleeping in the waiting room with people and elevators going by, but we survived. We felt like we were homeless for the night, but we got to make every feeding and didn't miss anything with Auggie. We did go home between the 5:30 am feeding and the 8:30 am feeding to get a shower and bring some more stuff home. When we got back the nursery nurse meet us at the door saying Auggie's jaundice count was down and that he was going to be released that day!!!! This was the best news we heard all week. They had to retest his hearing, circumcise him, take his pictures, and then go through the paper work of discharging him. Around 11:30 am they called us and said that he had been circumcised and that they could not get him to calm down even after Tylenol and sugar water. When I came in the nursery you could hear him screaming. They showed us his wee wee and then said please feed him! As soon as I got him and fed him he calmed right down. Seeing him cut and crying so hard made me so upset.
After several hours we finally got all the paperwork, tests and pictures done. We were free to go home with our new little bundle. We could not believe after such a long week that we were finally able to go home and start our lives together. We are truly blessed that Auggie is perfectly healthy and there were no complications after all he went through. He is a little miracle sent from above.
